You read folks, let's get some ideas flowing.
What would be the best computer for $2,000? I'm talking old, modern, stock, modded, you name it.
Right now I have my eyes on the new iMacs but I'm seeing so many mixed reviews.

Editting with Final Cut Pro, using Motion 5, possibly attempting music production
something that runs fast and renders quick

Funny you mention, I was looking into the 2013 $1799 27" iMac ad upgrading to the 1TB Fusion drive, which would bring it to $1999.
For those who don't know the specs:
Processor: 3.2GHz quad core intel core i5 processor with 6MB L3 cache
Memory: 8GB (it is easily upgradable on the 27")
Storage: 1TB Fusion Drive (reading up on them, it seems like an outstanding idea)
Any thoughts?

I'd be inclined to go i7 and try and get a 2gig GPU for what you want it for. Fusion drives are great but won't net as big a speed gain as the processor/GPU combo for most stuff. Then add RAM from Crucial or some such for a lot less than Apple. There are also issues with fusion drives under mavericks screwing up audio i/o with 3rd party interfaces...

Mixed reviews… I'm surprised at that. Any and all of them should be able to handle all but the most demanding of projects easily.
But bear in mind that the 27 inch models are upgradeable with third party RAM while the smaller versions are not. That can mean a several hundred dollar difference. Not to mention the greater display real estate and better performance overall.
The refurbished tip is definitely worth pursuing. Where possible that's my "store of choice" and I've had good luck with their products.

We have 2 of those referb 2012 27" iMacs. ersonally I think the 1 TB Fusion drives are worth it. We added $180 of Ram from OWC for 24GB. They work great for FCP X.
You can also get a 2013 model with a regular HD for $1869 in the Apple store right now:
