Hi guys,

Im in need of help. Please take a look at the clip, Im after learning how to do the floating 3d text in that clip. I can use motion 5 to create the 3d text and motion track that text but the effect that is used in the video is not just motion tracked because it looks like it's really floating text as its "locked" in place while the camera pans around.

Any help is VERY VERY much appreciated.

At what timecode is the specific floating text you're referring to?

That's tricky to do well in Motion.

Motion has a point tracker - you can pin a detector to a point in a frame and get the app to track how that point moves through the clip. By combining multiple point trackers you can affect layered elements in rotation and scale too. So in some circumstances you can add graphics layers which appear to be attached to objects as they move. However, the system isn't really built for shots like this, with a significant pan in 3D space.

For this, you'd get a better result more quickly using a tool like Mocha, which tracks not points but planes within the frame. By analysing the relative movements of multiple planes Mocha can sometimes extrapolate a 3D space within the scene, and provide a solution for how the camera moves through that space. You can export those camera solutions to After Effects for compositing.

But you work with the tools you've got, right? If you have smooth moves around cars you could do some nice-looking work using Motion's basic motion tracker and attaching text layers with the Match Move behaviour. There are plenty of tutorials out there on this, but Motion's own manual will guide you through the steps too.

have alook at the first post in this thread
www.fcp.co/forum/4-final-cut-pro-x-fcpx/...xt-tracking-in-fcp-x

looks like, coremelt is on its way for a plug-in which allows these things straight from within FCPX …

I'd just track it in Motion, the keyframe scale to fake it. Pretty easy to do. Or place the text inside of it's own Group, track that, then you can keyframe the Four Corners. Not as elegant as the coming Track X from Coremelt (in beta testing now), but for now, works fine.

TrackX is certainly looking interesting. Coremelt's current SliceX is a terrific tool for tracked mattes.

Both these tools bring the planar tracker from Mocha directly into FCPX and wrap it in a very effective, simple interface. They're quite amazing. However, they're not trying to handle every circumstance where Mocha & After Effects are effective. In particular, I think the kind of 3D move we're talking about in the first shot is beyond the fundamentally 2D FCPX engine.

For the sort of halfway house I suggested above, however, yes - when it ships, TrackX will likely be the quickest/simplest way of attaching a caption to a moving element within the frame.

thanks for the help guys,

I have sort of achieved that look using protrk plug in from pixel film studios. I have the text tracking well but not 3d yet.

Ill post a link when i done :)
