Help - How do I edit a musical

Hi guys

I'm frustrated. I need to edit a musical from our school, but I don't what the best way is. Maybe someone here has some good advice?

My school takes their musicals quite serious. So the setup was as follows:
4 cameras. One fixed, one on a crane and two moving around.
Audio was recorded in Cubase and all the actors were wearing micro ports.

Now this ought to be pretty straight forward, if it was all one take. But it's not. There were several breaks, and some of those breaks were used to make close ups of some of the scenes.

So now I have a lot of clips. Some of those clips show the same scenes, but are shot at different times, so they can't be "multicamed" all together. On top of that the final video needs to be synched with the audio track from the Cubase.

What am I to do?

Regards,
Asger

Actually, you can sync if there are breaks. But a few questions first.

Did the Cubase audio get recorded non-stop all the way through?
If so, export that as an AIFF, 48kHz, 16-bit.

Did the 4 cameras record audio?
If so, 1- Is that audio clear enough to hear what the Cubase audio has (even if it isn't as clear or as clean)?
2- Just how dirty is the camera audio?

Can you? Interesting!

I'm actually not sure (haven't received the audio yet). But I think it can be exported as one track per each half of the musical.

All the cameras recorded audio, and it should be good enough to hear. But it's quite dirty - at least too dirty to work as primary soundtrack.

Thanks for replying!

Yes, take all the files including audio from Cubase, sync them up, and use multicam to cut your storyline.

When I cut music videos I make the primary storyline the song. That way the magnetic timeline stays put.

I have had to edit multi camera live concerts and then use footage from the dress rehearsal. It usually sunk up fine mostly. I multicam the main concert, then multicam the dress rehearsal. The dress rehearsal songs are attached to the main performance and disabled. Then I can cut them up as needed later.

You are cutting a feature length performance, breaking it apart into smaller sections will be less daunting. Hope this helps!

Thank you, guys. This is really helpful!

@DmitriZigany So you think I should sync up the audio and all the clips at once? Won't that make very long clips? I mean won't every clip have all the audio? Or have I just misunderstood?

@Darren Roark That sounds interesting. So I sync the audio to the non-close up-footage and to the close ups and then I multi cam them separately. But how do you sync up the close ups to the primary timeline?

@BenB If you can find the time, I would love to hear what's next.

The best thing to do is watch some tutorials and read up on multicam editing. Once you fully understand how multicam editing works it will be a fun experience.

I suggest the graphically enhanced FCPX books for sale in the iBook store.

Check out the amazing multicam tutorial from Ripple Training, they do exactly what you're trying to do.
