Can Final Cut Pro do this?

Hello all,

Sorry for the noob question, but I am trying to do a video for work. I need to take an existing video and overlay photos over existing actors faces. Can final cut pro do this? If so, would anyone have a link to an instructional video?

I'd do that in Motion. You'd need to take your photo cut outs, place them on a layer above the original photos, then have them move with the original face in the original video. Right? Tracking in Motion would do that easier.

You could manually keyframe the Position parameters in FCP X, though. But that may be a lot of work, depending on how much movement there would be.

Coremelts soon-to-be-released TrackX would do this. You can ask for a beta from Roger at Coremelt.

EDIT: But no 3D mapping, though!

keep in mind, whatever of Ben's suggestions you follow:
FCPX/Motion handles that 'flat', no 3D, no 'morphing', no 'wrapping' around the face (MissionImpossible-Style).-

If you want to replace an actors face by some other pic, like a mask, you need - very elaborated - 3D tools, such as Maya, Cinema4D, … which allows to create a 3d-grid of the actors face and do some sort of projection-mapping...

I'm not familiar with such pro-tools, but if I rememeber correctly, the free Blender does it as well
... no beginners task, not really, not at all

Yeah, Blender does it. There are Tutorials for it available. Kepp in mind though that Blender, like most 3D software is a pain for a beginner. It is not like Motion where you just can follow a Tutorial.
