FCPX will not open. Just spinning wheel.

Started acting flakey. Could not produce a shared item of any kind. Now it says it's looking for the files and just spins on. One one attempt I did get it to open the full event. It froze when I attempted to move the play head. Weeks worth of work in jeopardy. Fear the worse. Any ideas?

Hi Bill,

This can be due to a number of things, so we will need some more information:

1. Are your FCPX Events and Projects on your system drive?

2. If so: how much drive space do you have left on your system drive?

3. If your Events and Projects are on an external drive: how is this drive connected to your system (USB, FireWire...) and how much drive space do you have left on that drive?

4. What is the format of your video and how much RAM do you have on your system?

Let's start with these and see if we can pinpoint the problem.

Ronny,

1. My FCPX Events and Projects are not on my system drive.

2. -

3. E & P are on an external drive. As this is my first experience with FCPX, I was unaware that the files would be considerably larger than Studio’s. The drive I chose is 63G, which would have easily handled any one of my previous videos. And now I have 0G left. The app asks me to make some room, but I don’t know which folders are essential sources. I suspect that this is a major contributor to my problem. I tried to move the E & P to a larger drive through FCPX, but the app froze the minute I touched “move”.

Three folders that are filled with data are Original Media, Render Files and Transcoded Media. Any one of which would, if deleted, open a clear path. Twice now, after a reboot, I was able to open the project. But attempting anything with the cursor will cause a freeze.

4. The files are formatted in mp4. And I have 24 GB of memory.

I greatly appreciate your offer of help. I know that my video is still in there. Just have to figure out how to stabilize it

Ronny,

I managed to open the file but all the clips were unlinked. I began to relink, with great success, until I hit the disk is full message. Once again I tried to move to a bigger disk... and froze.

Throw away the render files (can be done in the Finder). Then move your events and projects from within FCP to a bigger drive.

Hi Bill,

Sorry for the late reply, it was sleeping-time over here in Belgium. Glad you have been able to recover your work!
