Here's a timelapse video of editing one episode of a Finnish Adventure/Documentary/TV show "Arman's Last Crusade". The show has been a huge hit in Finland. The editor is Jesse Jokela.

May I ask how this was done? I have Screenflow but it doesn't have a timelapse option that I can find. Instead I'd have to record everything in real time at 30fps and speed it up later. This would be far less efficient and much more resource and time intensive than just recording 1 frame to a directory once every, say, 3 or 4 seconds. I found a Terminal code online which is supposed to do just that (save 1 frame every 4 seconds to a directory) but it does not work at all. Maybe what works with Terminal in one version of Mac OS X doesn't work with any other versions? I have no idea what version he was using but I get errors (command not found and syntax) even when directly copy/pasting his code. The command is this:

i=1;while [ 1 ];do screencapture -t jpg -x ~/Desktop/screencapture/$i.jpg; let i++;sleep 4; done

I get these errors:
i=1: Command not found.
while: Expression Syntax.

Redifer,

There's an app for that called Screenshot Timelapse. I just bought it for $1.99. According to the reviews, it just works & gets out of the way of working and then exports to mov file.

itunes.apple.com/us/app/screenshot-timelapse/id635692625?mt=12

Soundwise,

Cool timelapse of editing. I always enjoy seeing how others work in a compressed time. Thanks for sharing!

Start terminal. Enter this command:

echo $SHELL

What is the result?

The command you posted works when the shell is /bin/bash AND you have created a folder named screencapture on your desktop. I suspect you are using a different shell.

You are right. My result is:

/bin/tcsh

I tried changing it in the preferences for the "Shell opens with startup" but I still get /bin/tcsh HOWEVER the original desired command line now works! Thanks!

Glad you lot like it. I recorded the frames (1 every 10sec) with this app over a few weeks: itunes.apple.com/fi/app/timelapse/id449502656?mt=12

Then sped up and edited the video in Final Cut. I guess it'd be more interesting for us editors to see something like this, but only 2x or 4x faster than realtime. But the idea here was to share a glimpse to a non-editor of what goes into the post of a show (and yes, maybe show off FCPX a little).

The series will likely air in many countries next year or the year after under the name 'Beyond Human Boundaries'.

Very interesting. Am I correct in assuming that you started out with a Gap clip that was the exact needed for your finished show. Then used overwrite edits and the Position tool to maintain the Gap clip's length.

I appreciate the glimpse you offered us into your work.

Thank you.

Nicely done Jesse. I emailed the link to a couple folks at Apple, they liked it too. :-)

That's actually an incredibly good idea.

Plysat, haha that's awesome!

Scott, the long gap clip is there just as a lazy workaround to keep a few cutaway/establishing shots at hand (seen at the right edge of the gap), which I had to take out of a scene but wanted to make sure end up in the cut somehow. I think. Nothing as planned as you suggested. The fast-forward makes it look different, but I mostly edit in the primary.

If it was needed, I guess you could also make a compound the length of your show and edit inside it?

"If it was needed, I guess you could also make a compound the length of your show and edit inside it?"

Not directed at anyone here, but I'm always amused by people who bash the magnetic timeline because they feel like they can't tell if their show/spot whatever, is "to time". hmmm... go to end, look at TC, adjust program length. Very complex... ;-)
