I saw the tweet from @fcpdotco yesterday noting the iPad app Actions. For a buck, US (ends today I believe), I downloaded it to give it a go. While it is interesting and kind of fun I don't see the value of trying to use the app with FCPX. It is a controller. That is, you load a small menu bar client on the Mac, Actions sees it and allows your iPad to control the OSx or applications like FCPX from the iPad.
Does anyone have some experience with Actions? Somehow I can't envision any workflow using this app that comes anywhere close to the editing efficiency that is possible by learning even the most basic 10-15 FCPX keyboard shortcuts.
I ask because I want to love it, if you know what I mean. But, I just don't see how one could edit more efficiently if having to constantly shift vision between FCPX and a second screen covered with squares that represent individual menu commands.

Hey Bob,
I have yet to see the first iPad controller for FCPX that really works. Actions certainly isn't that one.
The only iPad remote utility that I absolutely love is the one that Apple made for Logic X. Great stuff. If they ever do something similar for FCPX I will certainly consider it.

I will take that a step further. The one Apple did for Logic Pro X, IMHO, is still just a fun toy. I don't get any boost in productivity from it. My old Euphonix Mix does me much better. I can actually feel each slider and knob without looking directly at it.

I cannot disagree with that. Though I love playing around with the Logic X controller, and I think it's the best developed iPad controller around, I agree nothing beats real knobs and sliders.

I used Action on one FCPX project that created 33 videos that were similar but with different footage. Action made the process of adding video and PP slides easier and faster then doing them using a mouse or trackpad. Since then I haven't used it because I haven't had a job that had that much repetition.

To date I've not found anything to match or replace my Magic Trackpad (not the same as a laptop trackpad).

Thanks all. I was wondering if I was just completely missing something or what. It appeared to me that Actions is only a wireless remote controller, command specific for a Mac. Use to launch an action when your not sitting in front of the Mac
A slight tangent, I think a complete remote access solution letting you log into the Mac from iOS is much better over all. Makes it easy to check the progress of renders, Compressor tasks, etc.
I LOVE the Magic Trackpad as well. I bought it because I just had to try it -never went back to a mouse.

Screens 3.1, I connect to my Mac from just about anywhere.
