with a Gor Pro hero 3 black i currently have to import and convert whole clips to prores - FCPX isnt letting me select ranges from within recorded clips

which is burning up my hard drive big time!

anyone know what the deal is with this ? - i hit i and o and nothing happens

(this doesnt happen with any of my other cameras)

Segment selection is only for the camera import function. Your material may have come from a camera, but you a doing a file import. There is no segment selection for parts of files.

ahh yes -

as part of my workflow i bring in the camera files to my hard drive and then import from there

- which seems to be a standard workflow for many people.

But i lose range selectability by doing this instead of importing direct from the camera / card.

That's correct. You can import directly from the camera and use the optimize function to create QuickTime ProRes media.

If you got old fashioned QT Player Pro you can make your selections there, copy them into a new document and save as referenced movie. These can be imported into FCPX with conversion activated to get the ProRes files.

I have about 10 hours of GoPro movies at the moment and I know the pain.
Most are split into several files – so they must be joined first. That also easy with QT Player Pro.
Good thing in my case (all movies are 3D stereo) is that FCPX does a real good job here when syncing the files.

It seems that if you keep the file structure intact you select a range.

You could also create Camera Archive from each card and use the selection feature when importing your media.

We went with this route since after Mavericks the converted clips from GoPro Studio will not play. :(

Sounds like a good idea.

Haven't tried that since I got the files from a customer who copied the files on a windows machine and renamed them.

A lot of people use Mpeg stream clip. This allows you to set in and out points on multiple clips (batch) and convert to a large selection of codecs including prores 422 :)

alternatively you can use cineform / go pro studio 2.0 to select your segments and click convert. This will transcode them to the cineform codec which is equally as good for quality and editing performance.

I prefer Mpeg stream clip though, light weight and powerful
