Confusion about Resolution Question

Hello,

I'm a bit confused. I shot some video at 1920 x 1280p. I was hoping to put it in a smaller frame like 960 x 720p so that the picture would be bigger and extend beyond the boarders of the frame, get cut off. When I do this it is always scaled to the smaller resolution that I choose and the full image always retained. What am I missing?
Or
Once I have this clip in a smaller frame do I just need to rescale the image back up in the transform box? Also, is there a calculator or percentage that I can increase the video in this smaller frame that will bring it back up to to the 1920 x 1280p resolution but not go over so I don't start pixelating it?

Thanks!

In the inspector of FCPX you can use the spatial conform setting to make your footage, Fit or Fill the frame. If you choose NONE, then any footage that is larger than your project size will extend beyond the set frame size.
