parent clip confusion

I have been putting slates between interview clips and using compound clips to allow myself to use them repeatedly and not have to recreate the font/format, etc. each time. I have been advised to use the parent clip feature. Here's my work flow and it isn't working: I create my title over black. I create a compound clip of that which appears also in the browser. I then make a new clip via reference new parent clip which also appears in the browser. I was under the impression I could then use that clip repeatedly because it wasn't tied to previous compound clips. I did about eight of these before I realized it was changing all my previous compound clips to the new one each time. I'm obviously screwing this up, but I'm not sure how. Thanks!

Compound clips are completely unnecessary for this, and just add a large layer of complexity. Make your first slate exactly as you like it, font, color, formatting. Copy it and paste it into wherever you want the second slate. Change the words of the second slate. Done.

But I will be using this work flow for this project over a long period of time repeatedly. I don't want to have to open up old projects to find my old slates and copy them. I like the idea of having a template in my browser that I can use from project to project. I click on it, hit E and there it is. I think I may have actually mislabeled my clips and brought down the wrong CC. Duh. Thanks.

As you like, but you're going to end up with a separate compound clip in your events for every slate you create. Opening a project and copying and pasting a slate from one to another doesn't seem that onerous to me.

I think you're right. As I move forward with this, the compound clips are giving me nothing but headaches. They are changing other cc's regardless of whether they're parent clips or not. I'm done with them. Thanks again.

Any time you duplicate a compound clip and you want to make changes that don't ripple through to others you have to use the "reference new parent clip" command on the copy. You can set up a keyboard shortcut for it to make it more accessible.

Yeah, but as Tom says, I 'll have to do it with each and every slate and winding up with a browser filled with compound clips. It's just easier to copy them on the timeline. I wanted a template that I could use over & over, but that doesn't seem to be an option. Maybe I could create one in Motion.

Sure - I agree with Tom. Making a template in Motion is probably the best option.
