Then select your Project and choose File > Delete Project Render Files. Delete ALL the render files, not just the unused ones.
Once your render files are deleted, try exporting again.
To prevent this kind of export failures:
- Always have Background Rendering turned OFF in your Edit Preferences.
- Export as a Master File first, then you can easily convert the master file to any other format you want.
- If your program is long and you use Mavericks: disable App Nap for FCPX.

I'm having zero problems with Mavricks and 10.0.9 FYI.

I'm having theses problems as well since 10.9, and although I can usually get 1 export done eventually, it's a pain to not be able to have a workflow since I put out a one-hour video per week...
So to summarize, I get the -1 or -50 error, depending on how FCPX feels that day. I get it on ANY kind of import, whether Master File, direct file export or even YouTube direct upload! After I delete render files I can usually get it to work, but some times it will still crash at around 80% and I need to Quit and start all over again.
I have disabled App Nap, I have disabled background rendering and multicam optimizing, and yes I have a fully legitimate version of FCPX (10.0.9) and Mavericks. I'm running a MacBookPro 8,2 i7 with 8 Gb of RAM.
ANY help would be great because I'm about to chuck it in the trash and buy Premiere..........

Sorry you are having trouble. For what it is worth, I think this is an isolated issue. I've exported dozens of projects with Mavricks as 10.0.9 and haven't seen this. I don't normally optimize media, nor do I render before exporting.
A couple of things to try:
- Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
- Create a new user account, and see if the export fails there too (this should be easy as long as your project is on an external drive.)
If you are really stuck, email me at my FCP.co username and my company name below, and we can screen share and I can help get this figured out for you.

It would seem that render files are somehow getting corrupted (since deleting them seems to provide short term relief) and while it may not happen to everyone, it is a widely reported problem. it would be great to hear from some tech-savvy people about their ideas of why some users run into this and others don't.

When I say I never render, I really never render. Perhaps that is one of the reasons I have not had problems myself. Plus I work with a small set of formats (Canon 7D, HDV mostly) so there is rarely odd stuff coming by way. I did have 3 kernel panics last week (the first time in about a year), but I isolated that to beta software I have been testing for FCPX.

Thanks.
I almost never render as well. When I do it's accidental.

I do render, actually - typically when I've thrown Neat Video or FilmConvert on a sequence and playback flips from 'frames per second' to 'seconds per frame.'
As for export - yeah, I've had one problem once where a duff render file blew an export for me. My current project's a bit painful as it's 400 clips, mostly from a Nikon D7100, and hence Neat Video is on pretty much every frame. A scorched-earth re-render takes about five hours. So I live in fear of another failed export right about now.

I'm working on a large student feature and for FX shots we create compound clips for needed shots (in the timeline) and placed them in a FX Event. Then we the work on that shot in the CC, and then when we are done we dupe the CC and increment it and then render then export a master file and then bring back in the master file and place it in the original CC (the one that appears in the timeline). That way we can easily change things as necessary and have it updated in the timeline, but we are not bogging down our editing or final export.

But hey, I'm very close to delivery, the client's broadly happy: it's working so far.

Actually I do just that with compound clips or Multicam and roles.
