Adding transitions to clips and losing footage length

Im just new to this forum and would like a little insight into a small technical issue I have with adding transitions to my clips.
At the moment I am making a music video and basically all the story line is complete and the music is all lined up with the clips and synchronised.
Im now adding effects and transitions which has lead to a problem.
When I add a transition, such as 'fade to colour', it shorten the lengths of the clip I'm adding it too, therefor shortening my overall story line and taking the music out of sync with the clips.
Im lost as where to go and was hoping someone may have had this issue before me and could help.
Cheers guys

Oh... uh, you should update it, It's free assuming you bought it. if not you should or you're SOL. That said, there's some preference that pertains to transitions and how they work, mess around with that if you can find it in one of the preference tabs... editing maybe?. FYI, 10.0 is uh... not even close to as good as the latest version, 10.0.9.

Oh I see, it was bought by a friend that never used it, never even installed it to his computer, and because i was starting film he gave it to me, so it had all the license number and what not with it so there shouldn't be any issue in updating it, all though i don't know if its feasible to download the latest version half way through an edit?
Ill also give that a go with the preferences and see if that makes any changes.
But I'm definitely going to look into getting the latest version.
Cheers

I'd say try to finish, then update...

I'm pretty sure it's there, but can't remember which setting to put it on. FWIW, if you like the version you have, you'll love the latest version... Good luck!

Makes no sense. You purchase via the App store, no license numbers, just an App Store login. It is non-transferable. If you simply copied the FCPX app from his drive to yours, that is a stolen copy.
As for shortening the length, it is supposed to do that. "Handles" are extra footage that are not being used in a clip. If you are at the physical start, or physical end of a clip, there are no Handles for the transition to use. Thus FCPX automatically ripples enough to add it.
