Titles keep flickering

Hello! New to this forum but had an issue I was hoping people could help me with. Every time I choose a title to add to a clip, it flickers on and off and won't stay stable throughout. I tried copying previously functioning titles from other videos and pasting them on to this project instead, but that doesn't work either. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi Sarah, and welcome.

If you haven't had any problems with this in other projects: the first things you can try are:

1. Shut down your computer and fire it up again.
2. Refresh your FCPX preferences. If you don't know how to do this you can get this free app that will do it for you: www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/

If this does not help we are going to need more information about your computer (type, how much RAM), your OS and the version of FCPX you are running, plus:

- do you have this with any title you want to add or just specific ones?
- how is this project different from the projects where your titles work?

It seems like he never came back...
But I have the same problem and didn't find any informations online about it except this forum...
(the number of tutoriel about "Ho to make titles flicker" doesn't help...)

I tried clean up my preferences, and yet it didn't help.

My config:
MacBookPro Retina 15"
Intel Core i7 - 2,5 GHz
16Go Ram 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GT 750M 2048Mo
SSD 512Go

I should be able to put a basic 3D title without problem I guess...

Any idea ?

I have had a similar issue over several computers dealing with flickering titles. What happens is, let's say I use the fade handles in the title clip for opacity. Renders out and plays fine. Then I go to somewhere towards the beginning of the project and trim a clip by, let's say 12 frames. Now when I go back and play the title section, the initial fade-in is there BUT also a flicker at about 12 frames into the title. It's almost like FCP is still reading a fade at that particular point in time on the project timeline. If I force a re-render of the title, the issue is resolved. Kind if a PITA on a hour and 15 minute doc I am working on now. Please note that this does not happen every time. Anyone else seeing this? I trashed prefs with no joy.

Yes, that post was 5 years old and it has nothing to do with what you are seeing.

What you are seeing is redundant render files. Do you have Background Rendering turned on?

At least on my MacPro, it is turned on. Will check on the iMac and MBP later. Will having it turned on cause that issue?

When you use Background rendering on a very long project or on a project that requires you to constantly make changes to clips, it creates loads of redundant (useless) render files that can conflict with the latest renders. So yes, this could certainly be causing what you are seeing.

We usually advise not to use Background rendering, but to work with the unrendered timeline (if your hardware is up to this) and only render if you really need to or for a final full quality check before exporting.
