Hi,
I`m wondering how do you create a blur ghosty effect in FCP and is it possible? Like on the photos taken with a slow shutter speed (around 30") Like in this video -

SKIP THE BEGINNING (first minute), it appears first time on 1:00.
I really like how this motion blur looks like and would like to use it in my project.
please help meeee

Hi Stacie, and welcome.

Nope FCPX does not have a true motion blur filter or setting. Some people apply the directional blur filter to achieve a motion blur-like effect but that's not the same as true motion blur.

- Either you do it in Motion 5 where you will find a true motion blur processor in the Project Properties:

The higher the samples you set, the higher the quality of the motion blur and the longer it will take to render. The highter the shutter angle, the more blur you will get. Start with a 90 degree angle and 16 samples and adjust from there. Motion blur can be turned off for working with the clip, and turned on before exporting:

- Or you get a dedicated motion blur plugin for FCPX. The only individual plugin that gives a true professional motion blur effect in FCPX is RSMB from ReVision: www.revisionfx.com/products/rsmb/

The latest version is compatible with FCPX and it comes with a solid price-tag of 85 dollars (you don't need the Pro verso which is more expensive but only adds vector motion bur for 3D). So if you only need this for one particular project it's cheaper to get Motion 5 (if you don't have it yet) and do it in there.

Nice info Ronny!

I might add though, the effect I see in the video is reminiscent of when I try to do some slow mo without enough frames and use optical flow. You get that blurry effect that I see.

Hey Don,

Yes sometimes you can get unwanted smearing effects when you apply optical flow slow motion, especially when working with native intra-fame video formats. But although it may look like motion blur it's just smearing caused by bad frame interpolation.

Classic FCP has a motion blur option, but that's really sub-standard. Motion5 is really the way to go to obtain a high-quality motion blur like we see in the video.

They could have used this program: www.revisionfx.com/products/twixtor/
Here is an example of what that program can do:

As far as final cut pro x.. I am not too sure, but if you are stuck its a great program to have.

Ronny,

I'm not at home to try right now. However... There is an effect called trails in FCPX. Sort of like a blur. Is the blur effect in Motion better than this?

There's a free trails plugin here: www.fcp.co/forum/simulated-effects/17419...px-effect-tky-trails

and

FCPX has one under Distortion:

The trails plugin in FCPX does a very good job at adding trails to any movement in the picture. It's an artificial video effect that was very popular in music videos in the 80's.

However this is not the same as motion blur which adds a more natural look to moving objects, just like the organic motion blur you get when you shoot moving objects at low shutter speed with a camera.
