custom fade to color

custom fade to color was created by parkerhqj
I like to fade to white sometimes to avoid jump cuts and I'd like to be able to customize that effect. All I seem to be able to do is take fade to color from the transitions browser and then modify it on the time line. Is there a way to make my fade to white (along with a modified duration) a favorite? thx

Hi Bill,
The Fade to Color transition in FCPX is a core transition, which means you cannot modify it in Motion to create a new default.
I have just made an adjustable "crossfade over white" transition. If you drop me an e-mail at ronnycourtens(at)mac(dot)com I will send it to you. You can try it and see if that's what you are looking for. If not tell me what exactly you want and I will make it for you. Only takes 5 minutes to do this.

Bill,
I have sent you the crossfade over white transition. There are some parameters you can change in the Inspector, but if you would like a different effect I will be glad to make it exactly as you wish.
FCPX does not really have a "Favorite Effects" feature yet, but I expect it will come very soon.

Thanks Ronny. That's exactly what I need.
I guess the difficulty for Apple is that all of the effects are generated through Motion, yes? In 7, you could literally create a transition to your specifications and make a copy of it and put it in a bin. But they had nothing to do with Motion. Is that more or less the situation?

That is partially correct. In FCP7 you could modify an existing transition and save it as a Favorite, but you could not create any transitions or effects yourself as easily as you can in FCPX/Motion5.
Many FCPX effects, transitions etc... are indeed Motion projects and they are quite easy to create even if you only have intermediate knowledge of Motion. That's a huge advantage. Just have a look at all the free effects you can find on this site, all of them have been created in Motion. The standard FCPX Fade to Color transition however is a proprietary core effect that runs on the Effects layer of the AV/Foundation core, and not a Motion effect.
What's missing in FCPX at this stage is a way to save customized effects as Favorites in FCPX (unless you modify them in Motion and save them as new effects), but I think it won't be long before we get this
