Not in the timeline, but if you highlight the clip(s) and go to the audio inspector you can disable (uncheck) it there.

Can't sleep? Try this: fcpxpert.net ;-)

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I had done the disable in the inspector and then I thought can I do it in the timeline... Ah well :)

if you know ON APPLYING the clip to your project, you don't need the audio (e.g. b-roll), click
shift-2

… then, only video of your selection is added
shift-3 only audio, shift-1 back to normal a+v .....

I'm using this constantly in my tiny sport-reports, while showing the scorer and hearing the crowd shout, I add replays, diff. cam-angles, slow-mos, statistics etc as 'intercuts' on top of the storyline.

Thanks everyone. This is a 40 minute doc on rural African coffee cycle. It has a mix of spoken word interview over stills as well as live video footage. I was exporting the audio from the whole project to take into Audition in order to put the various sound sources into the same sonic stage, I also wanted to generate a full noise track to match the project length. Once all the audio sweetening was finished I wanted to replace the project audio completely with the final mix tracks. This prompted the question as I wanted to click and drag over the entire timeline and do a simple right click or keyboard command to disable the connected audio source files. Hey oh, perhaps a feature request. Thanks again

When you click into your Project, cmd-a to select 'all' and then into the Inspector/Audio tab, you can lower the audio of your whole Project to zil, and add your processed audio as a new audio-track....

It is also possible to select all the audio in the "Timeline Index" then select the timeline and press "V" to disable. If your video is married to the audio, select all the video in the "Timeline Index" press CTL SHIFT S to detach audio then select all the audio in the and disable. This can take a few more clicks especially if you have a lot of transitions, but it is this way you "disable" the clips rather than lowering the volume. Just another way :)

Side note: you could also create a compound clip of everything detach audio and do it that way. Or lower the audio level like the others suggested. Detaching audio isn't such a bad thing, I find myself using it all the time. You may also want to take a deeper look at "roles" they can be very useful when trying to isolate elements of your timeline.
