PROJECT OVERLOAD ETC

PROJECT OVERLOAD ETC was created by MRIMD
I recently spent weeks on a music video (yes weeks). It's not conceptual at all, very abstract, yet there are a ton of plugins added to the video to make it more aesthetically appealing and fit to my style. This seemed to overload the 3min music video and now everytime I open the project, I get the RAINBOW OF DEATH CIRCLE.

My question is this. Is there any way to import things like Markers, Blade Trims, etc into a new project? I'd hate to lose all of the fine tuned edits and cuts i'd made to it. I had to just start over with a new version of the project because the original project will NOT even load now.

Any help, tips, suggestions....

Thanks,
Ian

Hi Ian,

Filters, plugins, titles... are all loaded in RAM. So if you have tons of them in a project you also need tons of RAM to cache them. When FCPX (or any other NLE) doesn't have enough physical RAM to load a project it will start using your drive to create virtual clusters of memory. As this memory is written to disk, and it is also being read from it, this can tremendously slow down your system depending on how fast your startup drive is and how much virtual memory there is to load. That's the spinning ball you are getting.

Most projects will be opened if you wait long enough until the virtual memory clusters are written to your drive. This may take many hours. Once your project does get loaded physical RAM gets released and you can export a master file from your raw timeline and use this as a pre-rendered version of the fine-tuned edits you have made. That's your "effects" master.

Next thing you do is open the raw project again, delete all of the effects from it so you have a clean edit of all your cuts again, and then add the "effects" master to your clean timeline. Now you can use parts of the effects master as an effects overlay to your cuts that have been finished and continue working on the cuts that need more finishing.

Of course another option would be to take your project and your event onto a system that is capable of handling effects-heavy raw timelines (a system with loads of physical RAM and very fast startup drive).

Thank you!

As of now I'm just working on the latest 13" Macbook Pro 2.5 GHz, i5 Core w/16GB RAM, however I only have 170+GB of disk space left on a 500GB drive. I've almost maxed out my 2TB LACie firewire external, so I'm in a pinch.

I'll try a mix of your suggestions, see what I can salvage from this project.

Thank you for your help.
