I have discovery channel footage of a lion roaring, how would i filter/efx this footage into a group of moving particles that form the image of a lion roaring in transparent space. like a png file with transparent background.

Unfortunately you're getting into something for which there is no "simple" process.

Very easy in Motion. Exploding people and things into particles is pretty simple. That's what I'd do, explode it, must easier. Then just reverse the footage in FCPX. There are several tutorials on how to do this around. The book "How To Cheat In Motion" has several examples. I've got a tutorial on macProVideo's HUB section for free. And I'm sure there are dozens on YouTube (I'll PM you some links). Just explode it in Motion, then reverse it in FCP X.

While you can do particle explosions, I think he wants the image held together, which is no easy feat-

Like I said, do the explosion, then reverse the clip, same effect, right? Or am I missing something here? In motion you can have the exploding particles swirl around, blow in the wind, not just randomly disperse.

You can reverse a particle explosion to get it forming (but let's be clear, it's not the same as whats being show in this video- rather a 2D cheat), but if you want to have the image hanging there in lion form after the reverse explosion if falls apart completely.

Whats in the video is a 3D particle lion. You can't form complex 3D shapes out of particles in Motion (basics like boxes and spheres, yes).

You could use a lion shape, fill it with particles and then try to use a brightens map to add faux dimentionality to it.

But there's no way to do exactly what's being shown here.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "what's being shown here". Everything in the Particle Metrix demo can be done in Motion manually. I've not seen any 3D shapes used in this thread so far. But sure, what I have seen so far in this thread can in fact be done in Motion. I don't see the Lion in 3D, I just see a photo or video off one. What am I missing?

As far as the lion being held together, sure, no problem in Motion. I do it all the time. Check out the book I mentioned.

I wasn't referring to the ParticleMetrix demo- that, yes, can be done in Motion.

The OP was referring to the Katty Perry video. You'd have to take a look at the original to see what he's looking to do, which is a complex 3D particle cloud, which Motion cannot do.

Ben,

Hate to spoil things, but Motion on its own can't do everything that ParticleMetrix can. Sorry.
Even if you could get close it wouldn't play and take a year to render.

I can theorize how ParticleMetrix could have been used, after seeing several of their videos. Otherwise here is about the best article i could find on a late tired night after DJ'ing a wedding reception!

Check out the variation on the Houdini (what the Katy Perry lion was created on) reel on their website. The reel isn't that long and is a great watch but the clip is the footballer (soccer player) at 1:53. It's pretty stunning.

Add $2k to that, you'll need the FX edition. And I'm sure what ever a top spec new Mac Pro comes in it could be useful.

I've not used Particle Matrix, thus I was only referring to what I see in the demo video. Those few tricks, yes, Motion can. But I'm sure there are other things no in the demo I don't know about.

Just looked over the Katy Perry video, that's a pretty simple trick. If you had an animated image to start with as a source, not too, too difficult. But I can see in a 3D app like Modo doing it in no time at all.
