Hi,

I currently store all my video on a SATA RAID 0 enclosure with 4x750 gig drives connected to a card in my mac pro with 4 x sata cables.... I'm hoping to buy a new iMac or even a mac pro and wondering if there is an adaptor that would allow me to convert this raid to thunderbolt??
Thanks,

Johnny

Where's the RAID controller? If it's in the RAID chassis itself and the chassis presents itself as a single eSATA device, you just need a simple Thunderbolt-to-eSATA bridge. LaCie make a simple two-port eSATA hub: www.lacie.com/UK/products/product.htm?id=10574 .

If the controller's in the card, then as far as I know you'd need a matching controller in a Thunderbolt-to-eSATA box. I'm not sure such a thing exists, but it would depend on the chipset and driver used to run the RAID currently.

Another option; if your enclosure has a port per drive, you could probably connect it to two of the LaCie boxes and rebuild the array by striping the individual drives in Disk Utility. You'd need to restore from backups, obviously.

But to be blunt: a 4-drive 3Tb RAID 0 is, what, four years old now? When were you planning to replace it?

Thanks for the advice... I think you're right, it would make more sense just to get a new thunderbolt array :-)

Yeah - it's brutal, though, for those of us at the lower end of the spectrum. I'm currently working on a 2008 Mac Pro, a similar-vintage 23" Cinema Display, and a crappy Samsung secondary LCD. Media is a on a motley collection of SATA drives spread around internal bays, and a couple of external eSATA chassis.

All of this is getting long in the tooth, and I somehow need to plot a transition strategy. My current plan is to buy storage first and work primarily on my (more recent, thunderbolt-equipped) MacBook Pro before jumping to a new desktop, but whatever I do it's going to be painful over the next year or two.

Much will depend on the new Mac Pro prices. Given the price of Xeons, however, I'm not optimistic that one will be in my future.

Same boat as myself.. waiting to hear Mac Pro prices... then a choice between it or a new iMac... then new storage!!
