Repeated Quicktime 50 or FCP 1 Errors

Repeated Quicktime 50 or FCP 1 Errors was created by Stuart
Hello everyone,
I recently went in to a large documentary project to soften the hard edges on a lot of still images and 4x3 video using the TKY supercrop tool. I've done this in the past in other scenarios with no trouble.
Once this thing had rendered out, I attempted to export the first 30 minutes of the project, and got a quicktime 50 error. After deleting render files and restarting I started getting FCP - 1 errors, saying it stopped on different frames.
I have proceeded to try exporting the whole project, small pieces of the project, master files, apple devices, email, and I have duplicated the project, trashed preferences, turned off background render, copied and pasted the clips into a new project then exported, copy/pasting and allowing it to render, then exporting, deleting all render files manually then doing it all again, etc. Pretty much every maintenance combo I can think of or read about, has been tried. I ran half of Digital Rebellion's toolkit on this stuff, and nada.
Projects with the same material before I went in and started the edge feathering all export fine. The projects that won't export all play fine and have no missing media. I'd really like to not lose the work and/or just know what's up. I love FCPX, overall.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Stuart

Hi Stuart,
Thank you for giving so much information on everything you have tried so far, this really helps.
There is a manual procedure that seems to work for this issue (see below). But before attempting this, there is one easier thing you should try:
1. Turn off background rendering (imperative!!)
2. Inside FCPX delete your Project AND your Event render files.
3. Export to ProRes 422 (HQ) without re-rendering (important!).
If this does not help follow this exact workflow:
1. Turn off background rendering (imperative!!).
2. Quit FCXP
3. Open Finder, go to your Project folder and inside the Project folder trash the "Render Files" folder.
4. Go to your Event folder and inside the Event folder trash the "Render Files" folder.
5. Empty the trash.
6. Launch FCPX, wait a moment while it restores your thumbnails, and try exporting again. Do NOT, in any circumstances, render anything before you export.

Thank you, Ronny. I'm trying an export now, after deleting all event render files one by one. Fingers crossed and if it doesn't work I will try the other option.

After following the internal steps I trice tried exporting and both times Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly after different amounts of time working on the export, between 30 and 90 minutes, I'd say. This was a new development, as it hadn't previously crashed with the 50 or 1 errors. I then tried the same thing but exporting by sending to compressor...this got me several hours of crunching before a quicktime 50 error.
I then did the external, steps of deleting all render files folders, and tried exporting only to have it quit unexpectedly once more. I tried again, and am now sending a hail mary out to compressor before bed, though that does not seem to be any real workaround.
I'm starting to suspect I'm running low on options to try. Any thoughts?
Thanks you,
Stuart

Ouch, yes I'm afraid you are running out of options here. I am starting to suspect one or more corrupt media files or a corrupt effect.
If this next export fails once again you could try exporting with all TKY effects disabled. I know that's pretty useless for you, but at least it would narrow down the cause of the problem.

Oh yes, if FCPX would crash again could you send me the crash log? You will find it in user/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/
Just send it to ronny(dot)courtens(at)mac(dot)com

Email didn't work for some reason so I PMED it.
Got a 5 minute section to export but any thought that it would help me isolate the problem has vanished as I've tried exporting other sections with no results. I think I'm going to have to delete this project and start over with an earlier copy, softening still edges with a different effect, though I've never had trouble with this one, before.

Hi Stuart,
Sorry for the late reply. I have received the crash log and I have passed it to someone who has far more experience in this matter than I have.
Your system crashes at thread 60 causing a kernel panic after invoking the rendering of an Effect. This means there is definitely something wrong with the effect at that spot. Strangely enough the same render does not cause a crash at thread 50. This could mean that specific settings of the effect do work, and other settings cause render issues on your system. Or that subsequent renders of the same affect cause a conflict in your rendering hardware. Following your problems I have used it on several test clips and had no issues whatsoever exporting. So there must be something specific in your Project that is causing these render issues. Hard to tell what it exactly is without much deeper and more detailed testing.
I'm afraid at this time there is nothing you can do but to use a different method to create your crops. Or to divide your Project into lots of pieces (so you only use the TKY effect once in every piece) and export the pieces individually. None of these are ideal solutions, but with the information we have now I don't have any other solutions to propose.
