Forcing italic font? was created by alven
Is it possible to force a font into italic if it doesn't come in italic in the first place?
I have heard this is possible in FCP7.

FCPX has no "faux italic" option. If the selected font does not come standard with an Italic version you have three options:

1. Search the internet to see if the font you are using has an official italic (also called Oblique) version and download and install this version. This can be a time-consuming process, the font may not be available for free and not all fonts have italic versions to start with.

2. In the Font Browser look for a font that is similar to the one you are using and that has a real italic version.

3. Use Distort to create a faux italic:

Select your title and in the Inspector > Video tab go to Distort.
For Bottom Left X enter a negative value (e.g. -300)
For Top Right X enter the same positive value (e.g. 300)

This will slant your title creating a faux italic.

Here we have a font that doesn't have an official Italic version:

And here I have used Distort to create a faux italic from the original font:

It is correct that when you use the Boris Calligraphy title tool in FCP7 you can have an option to create a "faux italic" for every font. Faux italic just slants the regular font, it does not create a real italic. Real italic versions of a font can look very different from a slanted original font. Typographic experts will never use a faux italic, they'd rather die :P

Thanks a lot. Yes it doesn't sound very professional "forcing" the italic font.
I was lucky to find an italic font I could download at last.

Thanks a lot for your tip, I will remember that if I ever have this problem again :)
