Exporting OMF file was created by alven
Hi. I need some sort of plug in to export an OMF file in Final Cut Pro X.
Does anyone know about any free once? I have heard about Automatic duck, but it seems like it's only for Final Cut Pro 7?
Help would be much appreciated!

Automatic Duck for FCPX stopped working at 10.0.3.
If you really need to export OMF and you still have FCP7 somewhere you can buy Xto7 (50 bucks) and use it to export from FCPX to FCP7. Then export an OMF from FCP7: assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/Xto7/
If your audio guy accepts AAF you can use X2Pro to deliver an AAF out of FCPX: www.x2pro.net
This is the easiest workflow, alas not free either.
If you have Logic Pro X: export an FCPXML out of FCPX, import it in LPX and export the OMF from there. Or just do your audio sweetening in Logic Pro X
Here's a tutorial on how FCPX integrates with LPX: www.loopinsight.com/2013/07/18/final-cut...c-pro-x-integration/

Thanks for your reply! I will have a look into Logic Pro.
I dont have Final Cut Pro 7 myself.
I was able to find this link: library.creativecow.net/battistella_david/FCPX-OMF/1 which make it look like it is possible to make an OMF file directly from FCPX. But my program is a bit different from the picture. I don't have a share tab at the top, I have it inside of the file tab, and not as many options it look like. So I'm not sure if it is possible? if there was a way to export it directly from FCPX I suppose that would be the easiest way.

Yes, I know that article. This workflow involves exporting a multitrack QT movie out of FCPX and importing the movie in FCP7 to export an OMF from there. This is doable as long as you don't have many audio tracks in your project. But your audio clips will not have any handles and every audio track will have the entire duration of your project. Also, any changes you have made to the audio in FCPX will be "baked" into the exported files. I don't think your audio engineer will be very pleased with this
Do have a look at Logic Pro X. We have always used ProTools at the shop, so I haven't paid much attention to Logic in the past years. But BenB on this forum seemed so excited about this new X version that I bought it and gave it a serious look. I am very impressed indeed. It will take another update I think before full roundtripping with FCPX will be possible for more complex timelines, but if it evolves the same way as FCPX I think LPX will become a serious candidate in our future audio workflow.

OK, It looks like this wasn't as easy as I though. I was hoping for a free option.
I can ask the sound guy if he can accept an AAF file. The X2pro program has two different prices in appstore. The one that is called x2proLe is a lot cheeper. Will that one still do the work?

Nope, no free ride on this one
There are a few differences between the two versions, you can see the comparison here: www.x2pro.net/feature-list.html
In the Pro version you can chose to not embed the media files in the AAF (use reference files instead), you can trim the embedded media files (to get a smaller AAF) and you get more detailed Roles assignment. This is especially important when you need to send large and complex audio timelines to a DAW. So it all depends on the kind of project you are working on. For most jobs the LE version will do fine. You can start with LE and upgrade if you ever need to have the pro options.

Thank you
It seems like the LE version could be a place to start then. Thanks for all your help!

hi Ronny
In Logic Pro X you can't export OMF. Only AAF

Yep that's correct. OMF export worked fine in Logic Pro 9, but it seems to have been omitted again from LPX. I noticed this only yesterday while trying to find a way to export a multicam FCPX project to LPX via FCPXML. Not a very intuitive workflow either, I must say. Seems it's going to take some more time before FCPX/LPX will become a viable workflow

So is XtoPro handling multiclip audio without issues? I'm trying to decide if I should buy xtoPro or LPX. I have ProTools 9 & it's running fine - but need to be able to read those FCPXML's.

Yes, x2pro was able to handle multicam clips, which made it a lot easier.
I only have the LE version (not the full one) but to me it seemes a lot easier to work with along with Final Cut Pro, than the Logic pro X.

There still are some issues with Logic Pro X not being able to read the full FCPXML from FCPX. The exported XML already contains everything that is needed (otherwise X2pro would not be able to read it either), but some changes still need to be made to translate every aspect of the XML to the Logic interface. As soon as this is done (and my guess is this will be very soon now) FCPX and Logic Pro X will work together seamlessly.
