Hello all, I would be most grateful to find out if anybody is using a MacBook Pro with SSD drives? If so what brand? I have a Late 2011 17" i7 with 8 megs of ram and a Hitachi spinning 7200 as the main internal drive. I am thinking about replacing the main drive with a SSD and then adding the internal spinning drive to the DVD optical bay which I never use?

I am unsure the optical DVD has the same speed as the internal main drive and will be fast enough to edit from or record audio to. I usually use a 3T 7200 Seagate external via the Thunderbolt port, and I have a Sonnet Express 34 Pro card also I have used with SATA 3 spinning drives to edit and record audio Logic Pro X etc. All work ok, but its a pain lugging heavy drives about. Thanks for any info and experiences. Cheers Don H

I recently puts two SSD's in my 2011 MBP and its been working out pretty well. I put an OWC 6g 240gb SSD as the main drive and replaced the SuperDrive with an OWC 3g 240gb SSD. OWC didn't recommend using a 6g drive in the SuperDrive bay in my particular laptop. My main drive for editing is a Lacie Thunderbolt drive and like you, lugging it around is a real pain.

I don't have any experience with them but Amazon has some decent prices on the Samsung SSD's.

Thanks for your help and advise. Have you used the 3g drive to edit from or save to with FCP? Rather then your external? Mind you 3g SSD is faster then 7200 spinning I think unsure? Don H

Using the BlackMagic Disk Speed Test, I get about 150mb/s write and 185mb/s reads on the SSD in the SuperDrive bay and over 400MB/s read and write on the main drive. I'm currently working on a project that is all GoPro 2.7k footage and its working fine editing it from the secondary SSD. Since it is slower than the main drive, I usually work with proxys when I work from that drive. Overall, I like being able to copy over a project and be able to work on it without dragging around extra stuff. And my battery life has increased since I don't have and spinning platters.
