How does one get freelance work in editing? was created by scottk23
hello
ive been using FCPX for about a year and feel very comfortable with the software. I'm currently in college and would be a lot happier if i was an editor full time. I know it's not easy getting steady work as an editor or any job in the film industry. I live an hour from Chicago and it seems possible to get a job in my home state. \
But how can i go about doing this? Does anyone feel using Craigslist is a good or bad start?
any advice is appreciated. thanks.

First of all, you need to sell yourself. You can tell the whole world you can edit, and probably nobody will care. But as soon as you have something to refer to people will start to pay attention.
Upload your videos/work to Vimeo, Youtube and anywhere else you can upload video and pictures. Share it on Facebook and communities.
Participate in discusson around internet. Let the whole world know you can edit.
If a potenial client wants you to edit their work, they want to see what you can do. And if you have some impressing work to show, they will hire you.

Network, network, network. You'll rarely get work online from someone who has no idea who you are. Most work is word of mouth. Get out and attend user group meetings, Meet-Up meetings, broadcast/video/film events around your area, in person. Have business cards with your phone and email on it. Meet folks face to face as much as possible. And as said before, have samples of your best work online for folks to access easily. For that, no one watches more than 2-3 minutes (if that much) of your demo reel before they make a decision about hiring you.
