importing a lot of clips was created by justin_lucas
I have been filming a lot with my GoPro in 1080p @60fps..
I now want to Import all the media into the Event Library so that I can start editing it. But it takes too long as it is such a large amount of clips.. How does everyone else import a large volume of clips??
I guess simply what is the best way to import a lot of video media to edit?
Should I be checking through all my clips in Finder first then only importing the good ones? I dont like doing that as its hard to look through the clips in Finder.
Also for some reason whenever I import without coping the files to a final cut events folder when i playback the clips in the events browser they are not smooth?
Thanks for any help..

1- You can preview what clips you want to import inside the FCP X Import window, which is easier than the Finder.
2- Yes, GoPro MPEG clips are very rough on the system to playback smoothly.
3- I created a simply "Droplette" in Compressor for my GoPro clips. It isn't much faster, as transcoding is transcoding, but since FCP X stops transcoding while you're doing most tasks inside FCP X at the same time, the Droplette works non-stop and in the end is faster. Plus, FCP X doesn't bog down. Then I simply import the ProRes 422 files Compressor created for me.
4- Even doing #3 above, I get great playback, clips in the Event folder or not.

Ok thanks for that
I also find it time consuming previewing them in the FCP preview window.
Its really odd when I optimise the clips and copy to FCP events folder when I import it seems to run as smooth as butter.
But I think when I link the clips to the folder it seems to struggle.
However it may just be a coincidence and may be running less smooth due to the larger number of video files.
It is frustrating as the first couple of edits I made were running smoothly the whole time. Given I have the top of the range Mac book pro with 16gb it should run smooth. I have also kept all my event and project librarys on different external hard drives to not slow down the main drive..
Well ill try your suggestions thanks a lot for the input..
Cheers

If you let FCP transcode, it does this in the background, making it sluggish, which is why I let Compressor do it. GoPro clips seem to take a ton of horsepower to transcode.
When you import into FCP X, it is copying clips, which takes up some background processing, and can slow stuff down.
When it is all over and done (check your background processes), you should have great performance.
Remember that the newest MBP doesn't have the most powerful GPU, so don't expect it to be a work horse, too much.
Also, what hard drive are you putting all of this stuff on?

Also, 1080p at 59.94 frame-rate is fairly demanding.
