AVCHD clips are recorded with clip names such as NJ5C0405, but when I import that have names such as 2013-07-06 16:47:02... I can't figure out how to fix this and keep the actually clip name. It get very hard with the client I edit for say clips such and such, but nothing inside FCPX matches up. I'm sure there a simple setting to select/unselect, but I haven't been able to figure it out.

Any thoughts?

Select the clips. At the bottom of the inspector select use Apply Custom Name and select Original Name from Camera.

One more question, I chose the option you described, but it kept the name final cut gave it (B5714488), but the original name, which is showed in the original name field in the inspector and on my hard drive is 008A2839. I have no idea how this is possible, any thoughts?

The two are entirely seoarate. In FCP you're just changing the name as it's displayed in the application.

But Final cut doesn't change anything, it's keeping a name that it created itself. Even when I choose the original name option it keeps one that doesn't exist anywhere else.

Let's start at the beginning. The information you're giving here is different from the information in your first message.

Where does this clip name NJ5C0405 come from? What camera shot this exactly and in what format? Most AVCHD cameras do not assign this type of clip name.

What software version are you using?

When you import what name does FCP give this file?

When you change to camera name what name does FCP change to?

The clips were all shot on a Canon Mark III.

I'm fully updated at version 10.0.9.

When I import Final Cut is naming the clip B5714488 no matter what I select, and other clips off a Canon Mark III are being named by their date created and time recorded.

When I change to Camera name nothing happens, but the option no longer being available after I have selected it the first time.

So this isn't AVCHD.

There are a couple of ways to import from a DSLR camera and depending on what you use, different things will happen. If you import using the camera import function, the clips get named with a date/time stamp. If you select the clip, and use change to camera name, nothing happens. Click off the clip and the name should update to the camera name. Are you not seeing that behavior?

If you import using the file import function, or drag into the event or project, I don't think it changes the file name.

I'm using file > import...it seems to of changed the name on the clips I tested now. Not sure what is different. I'll have to find my original issue clips and see. Thanks
