iMacs and Fusion Drives

For those editors using a 2012-2013 iMac with a fusion drive, have you had any issues or problems with the fusion drive while editing with FCP X?

Is there a way to partition the SSD portion of the drive? Why would the SSD have to be partitioned?

Thanks.

A fusion drive looks like a single drive to the user. You don't see the SSD. The OS manages the content. You have no direct control.

I've a fusion drive in my iMac. No issues to date.

I would question the use of a Fusion drive for FCPX based on so much of the advice given on this forum that editing on a system drive is risky. Though there are two physical drives in the Fusion configuration, apparently they are treated as one so it implies your editing on a system drive. It would seem better to have the two drives available such that the SSD is clearly the OSX system disk and the larger rotating drive is the data drive for the Events and Projects folders.

Marchyman,

Thanks for responding to my post.

Which fusion drive do you have - the 1 TB or 3 TB?

What kind of projects do you edit?

Do you use an external media / scratch hard drive or a RAID?

Bobbyco,

The fusion drive would be used as a system drive, not a media or scratch drive.

What system do you use to edit with?

I have the 1TB drive. My media drive is firewire for now. I also have an eSata raid drive for backups connected to a Lacie Thunderbolt/eSata hub. Next media drive update I'll likely get something with
eSata. I'm a hobby user. My output is for immediate family or the local motorcycle group. My goal is to someday tell some kind of story in about three minutes of non-boring video. :)

I'm learning a lot from this group.

For Bobbyco: the fusion drive is for the OS and a LOT of other stuff that has nothing to do with FCPX. I'm using about 1/2 of my 1 TB.

Ok, that's good. When I saw you were asking about partitioning the SSD I assumed (sorry) you were planning to edit on/with the Fusion.

I'm on a Mid-2010 MB Pro 15" with 8GB ram, Superdrive removed and replaced with 128GB SSD + 750GB Seagate Momentous hybrid drive. The only thing lacking is the GPU of this model isn't like the new stuff
Well, yah, no Thunderbolt either. Just FW800.
