Create proxy media crashes the app

I've got one clip that I'm trying to create a proxy file for a multi cam edit - all the other clips from this card have successfully converted to proxy, yet this one clip begins to transcode until it reaches about 10 percent - when it crashes FCP X. I've trashed prefs and even used MPEGstreamclip to create a quicktime duplicate of the file - thinking there was something in the original qt clip that was hanging things up - with no success.

Is there a way to create a proxy file - outside of FCP X - that I can use inside FCP X for the edit and still retain my editing once I switch it back to original media?

Before I explain how to work with externally created proxies let's first see why your clip does not transcode. There could be other issues at hand.

Has the clip been successfully imported in your Event and does it play in your Event Browser?

Is your Event on an external drive?

How much space do you have left on your system drive and on your external one?
