Ive been uploading videos to youtube lately for a project. And I've been uploading them in 1080pHD. I haven't been able to share directly from youtube so Ive give to share- master file- source. and it has uploaded that way. I tried to be clever and change the settings in order to make the resolution even better, but in stead i managed to drop it down to 720p. Now the problem is that I turned back to the old settings that I had before, but now it keeps giving me a 720p resolution, I can't figure out why? I need to figure out this ASAP.
Please help!

I used Apple ProRes 244 at first, and I changes it to Apple ProRes 244 HQ and it got worse!
I canged it back, and nothing happened, it still is the same as when I shared it in 244 HQ now, it's like I can't go back.

Depending on the time or even the day it can take Youtube a while, even a day or two to process the 1080p version of your video. Youtube's programmers are always tinkering around and messing things up and they usually fix the bugs after a week or two. Not long ago (few weeks, maybe) no video would process beyond 720p. Too bad there's no way to directly contact them abut issues. They have forums but the people who matter rarely if ever read those forums.

I wouldn't upload a ProRes anything to Youtube unless your video is 30 seconds or less. Otherwise you're just wasting time.

Ok, so this is a youtube problem then? Then I hope it will be fixed soon.

Well it didn't take that long, the video is 1:44 min long. What way would you recommend?

I usually just take the ProRes into MPEG Streamclip (free) and make an MP4 with a hefty bitrate. The video I uploaded this way recently went to 1080p so maybe try this and see if it works for you.

So that wont decrease the quality of the video, more than the ProRes in youtube?

I will look into it further, thanks. Also what do you usually set the bit rate as?

As far as the final result that Youtube delivers to the masses, no it won't make much if any difference. I usually set my bitrate to 15mbps. Don't enable B Frames. Youtube's compression guidelines recommend them but if you enable them in MPEG Streamclip your video's sound will go out of sync by 3 frames.

YouTube's recommended encoding settings.

I'd note that you can't do High Profile CABAC encoding in FCPX/Compressor/Quicktime.

I read in an interview with a YouTube staffer a while back that they do recommend such high settings even if you won't see the difference today. The file you upload is used as a master so when the tinker with newer and better quality they're going to reuse your master for a new encode if it takes advantage of the new settings.

This is the "simple" Quicktime based settings.

Interesting to note that their Advanced settings I previously linked to says 2 B-Frames but in this simple setting it says Frame Reordering unchecked which, as Redifer describes, would mean no B-Frames.

It may well be just as Apple can't do High Profile CABAC, it's Frame Reordering is doing something other than 2 B-Frames.
