What is the capacity of your internal drive?
How much of it is free space?
Same stats for your external drive.

Yep, this was a cross-post wit another forum. Drives and RAM were OK and non of the obvious troubleshooting methods helped. Optimizing the "black" clips to ProRes (one after the other to avoid these memory issues) seems to have worked.

Lesson learned once again: never do a major update in the middle of a project.

Sorry, yes the problem is solved. I had to transcode each black clip to optimize it. But to prevent the error "startup disk no more space" from popping up, I had to turn off the background rendering apparently. I guess my MacBook cannot transcode and render simultaneously?, not too sure. Or if it was the jump from 10.0.5 to 10.0.9.

Thank you for posting the solution.

Background rendering is a real bitch and should be turned off when you do any other memory intensive tasks. That's where you got the memory issues from.

But the basic issue you have had (with the clips going black) was clearly due to updating from 0.5 to 0.9 in the middle of a project. So many things have changed between these versions that you were bound to get in trouble. Good to know for the future ;)
