Must I really import and transcode 7 minutes of garbage footage for 10 usable seconds?

Must I really import and transcode 7 minutes of garbage footage for 10 usable seconds? was created by El Cuajinais
So far this is my only gripe with FCPX, but it is a HUGE one. Today accidentally left my camera rolling in between shots. Do I really need to import the whole thing and spend about 40 times the amount of hd space that I really need. I know I must be missing something here. If FCPX does not allow this, can anyone recommend a free editor to precut the footage before going into FCPX. I’m thinking GoPro’s CineForm since I’m not fluent in video formats, I worry that I will either compress or decompress my footage while trying to only cut it in CineForm.
Any advice is welcome.

In the import window, you can select a range of the media to import instead of the whole clip.
