So when you change the default duration still image in prefs before importing and image sequence why do you have to then select all the clips and change the duration of the clips again once they are in storyline?

The preference isn't for importing. The pref is for selection. When you click a clip in the browser the duration that's selected is the preference.

So then when you select a number of still images and append them to the Storyline you then have to change the duration of them again?

That's correct. If you really are talking about an image sequence it's best to handle it externally in Compressor or MPEG Streamclip or the QT7 pro player.

I usually deal with them in AE because you can use pixel motion settings to smooth them out more but after seeing a few tutorials about using FCPX I thought I'd try it and see what the actual workflow was all about.

Motion is the way to go with image sequences. It is fantastic.

Motion opens image sequences as a single clip. It is much easier to animate using either the transform controls or behaviors and it has frame blending and motion blur. It also seems to handle super large images much better than FCP.

I honestly hadn't thought of using Motion for image sequences. It pretty much tackles it the same as AE really. Will have a go in Motion next time though!
