You need to think of this effect as a composite, and build it in 2 seperate stages.

Stage 1- make your graphic.
1. make the fill of your graphic on the primary storyline of a new Compound Clip
2. use Pixelmator, Photoshop, or image package of your choice to make the bubble outline.
a. Import this outline file (with alpha) into FCPX
3. Add the bubble outline as a connected clip above your bubble fill
4. Select the bubble graphic and go to the video tab of the inspector. Choose "Stencil Alpha" as the Blend Mode in the Compositing category.

Stage 2 - add bubble to your video
1. add your video clips to the main storyline of your project
2. use the compound clip you created in stage 1 as a connected clip over your base video layer.
3. use the transform tools to move it in position and/or rotate it as you'd like.

Happy Compositing!

Hi Scott,
how could you fix the bubble to a (slightly) moving point (e.g. the mobile) in the clip? I saw it, how easy it was to create with Aftereffects. Is there a possibility to create that effect crabwise with FCP/Motion? Does a Plugin exist or two, I can combine to get this result?

Thx!

Motion does offer a motion tracking feature you might try, Wortloop. If the movement is not too heavy you could also try to keyframe the position parameters. Hope this helps.
