Logic Pro X <---> FCPX XML - What do you get?

I understand a couple of people have already downloaded Logic Pro X so hopefully they've also had chance to see what is and is not supported.

How do roles come across?

If you have a multicam clip with all audio tracks enabled, what do you get in Logic Pro X?

Do you still have to export to a stereo (or 5.1 etc) file to import to FCPX or is there some better way of doing this now?

It looks like Logic Pro X still had no noise reduction (sample noise pattern) instead of the almost useless automatic version we have in FCPX. Is this correct?

If you have too much background noise (vocals are not loud enough over the background), even STP would have trouble with it. That's just bad production practices. And there are better apps for noise reduction. Hopefully that will improve. But remember that LPX is a DAW first and foremost.

LPX is so much easier and faster to use, I love it. But, after two days with it, as much as I love it, the FCPXLM read function is buggy and all hell. I'm sure an update will fix that soon.

You export from FCP as FCPXML. LPX imports that. You have all your audio files referenced there, plus a video reference. Do your work. Export back to FCPX (there's a specific function for that). You choose your options, a drive, and export. What ends up in FCPX is a new Event with that LPX project as a Compound Clip, all audio files in their own lanes, in place, seperate.

You can also create a new project from scratch in LPX, save it as either a folder or package in the designated LPX projects folder. When done, Share a version to the Media Browser, and it will show up in FCPX's audio media browser.

Your FCPX project, from my understanding, determines if what LPX imports is stereo or some version of surround sound.

You can always just export an AIF from LPX and import that in to FCP X the old fashioned way, nothing wrong with that.

If you have control of the environment that is true. If you have zero control then it's not bad practice as such, it's bad luck and something the client expects you to deal with. If you consider weddings (which a lot of pros look down upon until then realise how hard they are to do 'well'), the hotel may refuse to turn off air conditioning during the speeches because the comfort of guests is more important to them. sometimes they even turn it UP during the speeches! No matter how close you get the mic, e.g. the lapel of the speaker, if the A/C outlet is right above the speaker's head you are screwed. Some AC is easy to fix while others if total chaos.

And there are better apps for noise reduction.

Suggestions?

I completely understand that - I guess I was hoping that some configurable NR was included for easier round tripping when that's all that is really needed.

So far it's not working on my end. I exported out a short film I am working on as FCPXML then imported into LogicProX. In FCPX it has 5 music cuts, 2 channels of dialogue, a few SFX clips. When I bring it into LogicX it turns that into 146 tracks!!! Looks like it is grabbing every piece of audio associated with every clip and giving it it's own track. No support for Roles which might have cleaned this issue up. Additionally on the video side it is only bringing across the first video clip in the film and nothing else. And that first clip is the entire clip, not just the edited segment of the clip that is in the film. So my first opinion is that this is a gigantic fail. However I need to preface that by saying I am no Logic expert so it could be something I am doing.

Here's the workflow I used to get it in to LogicX. Exported the project as XML from FCPX. Opened a new project in logic and imported via the File --->import----> Final Cut XML menu.

iZotope Rx is what you're looking for.

Yeah, LPX's FCPXML is buggy as hell right now. I'm sure we'll see it fixed in an update soon.

What would happen if you created secondary story lines for each of the audio roles? i.e. one story line for dialog, one for sfx, one for music? Would that end up putting all the audio in a single track in LPX? For each storyline?

I just did a simple test with a AAF file that came from X2Pro and it imported just fine to LPX. Tracks were named according to Roles and the volume automation came thru. So all the info is there already but it just does not carry thru properly through fcpxml import. Yet.

Same here. They'll figure it out, it took Marquis a while to get it to work. ;-)

Can't sleep? Try this: fcpxpert.net ;-)
