After I finish exporting the video that I edited on final cut pro x. I can only open this with quicktime. I found out later on that the only way to compress the video is to export it to the following resolution 480p, 720p, 1080p. I usually select 1080p. Is there another software that I can use to compress my video? Thanks.

This is quite incorrect. The default player is the QT player, but the video can be played in VLC, Movist, Pro Player, and others I'm sure. What do you need and what do you want to play it? You can export an MPEG-4 that is cross platformed and will also play in many players.

Let me paraphrase that. My concern is not really opening the video using other players but converting the video using other video conversion software.

What is the outcome you're looking for? As Tom said, you can convert to mp4 from FCPX, which is almost universal.
Other software for conversions could be the free MPEGStreamclip or Apple's Compressor.

Ogg & WebM are the two types that come to mind that I would like to be able to automate through compressor in addition to the already included formats. Are there plugins around for those or is everyone still going to third party encoders for them?

Right now until the 25th you can download MacX-Video-Converter pro for free. Here's a link…http://www.macxdvd.com/mac-video-converter-pro/
Just another way to do it. Price is right.
