Can anyone please advise me on the best Trails Effect for Final Cut Pro X

Here's a Trails effect which uses the trails filter from Motion:








You need to use the Position, Rotation and Scale controls provided within the effect rather than the Inspector's built-in Transform controls which won't activate the trail effect.

To install the effect unzip the attachment and copy the entire folder to your User/Movies/Motion Templates/Effects folder.

i dowloaded the link but there was nothing in the Media folder - there was two png files and a document. Should there be more?

As I mentioned above, do not open the folder, just copy the whole thing into your User/Movies/Motion Templates folder without changing anything.

There should be no Media in the media folder - this is correct.

The effect will show up in your effects browser inside FCP X if you have installed it correctly.

I copied the whole file into

User/Movies/Motion Templates/Effects

and it does not show up in Final Cut, what do you think I am doing wrong?

Is it possible you are still opening up the folder and pasting only some of the contents? You need to paste the whole folder with everything in it - don't even open it up, you don't need to know what's in it

Here's the effect again just in case there was an issue with it ( there are a few more published controls this time to make it more interesting to use).



Unzip the attachment. DO NOT OPEN IT. Copy the entire folder to your User/Movies/Motion Templates folder.

Inside FCP X go to the Effects Browser, type TKY Trails into the search box and the effect will come up.

Note that because of the way the Apple Trails filter works, this effect works best with still images. Moving images are motion analysed and not only the movement of the frame but also the movement within the frame is "trailed". Of course you may like that.

Here's the effect in action using a Y rotation animation which has interesting possibilities:

i've downloaded the effect but it shows in red. Like something not connected or what effect can I use for trails like in music videos.

It's likely something got messed up when you installed it. Follow Simons step by step above and it should work. As to the "music video" effect you're looking for... if Simons effect doesn't work, I'd suggest stacking copies (as many as you want) of the clip you'd like to see trails on, lower the opacity on the copies to...maybe 40% and then offset each copy by a few frames until you get the desired effect. Add a dissolve to the front of each copy. Make sure to leave the base clip opacity at 100%. Mess with offset, opacity, dissolve type etc on the copies. You can make something pretty cool just by editing, no effect needed. Or, try the "Trails" effect in FCP X under the distortion category...
