YOU CAN SKIP THIS. I figured out what happened, see my next post, it's really odd...

I've been editing a few multicam videos and everything has been fine. I'm past the rough cut phase and was just trying to make a few revisions. Now, when I want to add a cross dissolve, it says there is not enough media and it will need to ripple, but this is not true. To test this out I deleted a transition that I put in earlier, when I tried to put it back in I got the same ripple edit.

What kind of bug is this? What did I do to make this happen? I use event manager a lot, but have had no issues. I also switch around from proxy and optimized media, but no issues with that in the past either.

Hopefully there is a way to get out of this corner because I'm unable to make any more edits because of this.

The only thing I can think of that might have screwed this up is that I copied the project and event files to a thumb drive. But I put them a few folder levels down and named the folders completely differently than anything FCPX would do.

I also tried to add new clips to the timeline to see if I could get transitions between them, nope, still says it would need to ripple.

Duplicated the project and it has the same issue.

So, in another project, I set the default transition to be .12 seconds and it worked perfectly on the other project. But on the project I was having issues with, it did not work. So I reset the transition length back to 1.00 and everything worked fine.

Is this a bug that I should report or something else I should have known?

Not a bug, the default transition duration is what it is, the default transition duration when you place a transition in place initially. That duration can always be changed. And that can always be copied and pasted to other edit points (keeping the duration).

Not enough media means you do not have enough "Handles" to cover the transition. When you add a 2 second transition to an edit point, each clip needs to have at least 1 additional second of physical material to cover it.

When you get that warning, tell it to NOT do the transition. Then double-click that edit point. That opens up the Precision Editor. There you will clearly see there is not enough footage on one side or the other to physically place the transition. It will in fact require a ripple edit to force it.

What are you expecting to happen?

The issue is that there is media. It's a 5 minute multicam clip and I was able to add transitions before, there was literally minutes of footage for the transition.

What happened is I changed the default transition length from 1 second to half a second for project B. When I started working on project A again, it would not let me put a transition in anywhere. Even if I added fresh media with plenty of room for a transition, it would not work.

Once I switched back to the default transition of 1 second, everything worked fine.
