FCPX Multiuser Workflows

Hi,

This came up in the .9 wishlist thread and it's something I'm interested in so I thought I'd start a new thread. I'm a single user - from shooting to delivery - so FCPX is perfect for my needs. Recently I worked with a local company (on FCP7) and I was painfully aware of how fast FCPX could do a lot of what we were doing manually (multiple camera and audio syncing/fix rolling shutter/match colours between cameras). The other two editors I was working with were not as familiar (if at all) with FCPX as I was and the motion graphics department was downright hostile to it (still believing the bad hype from the release. Apple, that mud sticks for a long time). I think they're keen to get a video edit suite set up for at least a couple of editors and I realised I don't trust FCPX for multiple editors. On this particular job we were swapping round thunderbolt hard drives so I don't see FCPX having a problem with that as each drive would have the project files and event on it (providing all media was on the drive) but I was curious how it would work with shared storage. For instance, if I had a job with 20 edits using a large bank of material in a single event for the same job, how would two editors access the same media - over a san, for example - without conflicts? Is this possible yet? I'd like to see apple lock project files in realtime if two editors are working off the same event so that FCPX projects/events are "live" between machines (like dropbox)

Thoughts/suggestions/etc?

For the sake of interest, the same company tried a previous job using Premiere and apparently had an insane nightmare relinking footage when trying to open up projects on different machines.

John Davidson did a series of helpful (and interesting) videos on his company's multi-user FCP X workflow over on creative cow. I suggest taking a look at it.

Thanks for the tip. The series looks really good. I'll check it out when I'm not working (not sure what the protocol on this forum is for posting links to other boards).
