Mine can be pretty sluggish (i'm learning as I go along thanks to help on here) but things speed up if you convert your optimised files in FCP 'preferences'to proxy files (smaller files)

Make sure you convert back to Optimsed befor you send to compressor etc

PS speed can also depend on what usb cables you are using etc ideally usb 3
