I am doing a big project 700 Gigs on a new iMac on XD cam IMX 50 SD material.

Specifications:

iMac 27" 3.4 GHz intel Core i7
16 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeoForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB
pegasus 12T r6
FCPX 10.0.8
MacOSX 10.8.4 (first 10.8.3 but hte problem was there too)

The project involves a lot of multi cams. (but max 3 cams) The problem is the following. When I press the space bar in the timeline. I get de ball of death for 30 sec and then it will start to play normally. This happens all the time. Sometimes it takes 15 seconds. And even when I want to play a normal non multi clip it occurs.

Skimming works very well and when I play the same clips in the event it doesn't happen.

I transcoded all the clips in the timeline to proxy proRes and the problem is still there. I've also tried to make a new project, but that doesn't help either. Trashing the prefs didn't do it either.

Digital rebellion Housekeeper didn't work

When I play the project on a different computer, the problem is still there.

All the other projects I have stored on the same HD works perfectly. I must say that they are in ProRes.

Can someone tell me what's wrong?

I had a similar problem. I have the same exact setup but 32GB RAM. Media (ProRes)/Event/Project also on the R6. I did all the troubleshooting tactics for a week to no avail. The only thing that helped was not using too much compound clips, reducing stills resolution size, then my multicam clip was corrupted (I don't know how that happens) & went back in time using 'Backups for Final Cut Pro' found in the App Store & had to redo a 30 minute multicam to get to stop "beach balling" on every cut/angle change.

I feel your pain, brother! A fast setup & still get "beachballs". Good luck to you.

I'm running a mid 2008 MacBook Pro with 16GB Ram and had a similar problem, except when I tried to export, the program would crash. Here is what I did:

I always made sure the background rendering was 100% I simply left my computer on with FCPX open before I went to work and let that thing sit and take its time. It was time consuming, but in the end it worked.

The strange thing is, I did 4 shows before this with the same kind of clips and I had no problem at all. The whole program was a 50 min. multi clip.

I now converted all the material from SD IMX 50 to ProRes and the problem is still there. I really don't now what to do anymore, except going back to FCP 7

First, verify that you have at least 15% of each attached drive's capacity as free space.
Verify that no virus or other apps are running stuff in the background at the same time.
I'd run Disk Utility, repair all drives.
I'd run Disk Warrior and rebuild the directory on all drives.
If it is still doing that, I'd take it in to an Apple Store and have them troubleshoot it.

Some causes of sluggish playback:

1. Too many events — use Event Manager X to disable unused events.
2. Corrupt project — try copying parts of the project to a new project, repeatedly adding more and testing, and stop when the problem recurs.
3. Something wrong with your Mac — if you can, move Project/Event to another drive, plug it into another Mac, and see if the problem persists there.

Also, avoid dropping Multicam clips inside of Compound clips.

I even discovered a glitchy ram chip was giving EEC errors - that caused some sluggishness, although not nearly as bad as what the OP is describing.

I have same issue and I believe its because of what Ben suggested not to do, which was
" avoid dropping Multicam clips inside of Compound clips."

Anyone have a suggestion to applying overall edits to a multicam without using compound clips?

I can't use an adjustment layer because most of the edits I need to make are to the audio,
as well as applying a master limit to the audio throughout the multicam, etc

thanks!

Yes — open the multicam clip itself, then apply the changes to the source audio. They should carry across through the edit.

Ok I was mistaken, the problem was due to using multicam clips inside a compound clip , like Ben b said not to do

Problem is I made all my edits to the compound clip, a rediculous amount of cutting for this client who wanted ever "um" and stutterer removed,

Anyway I can save my edits and get out of this multicam inside a compound clip dilemma ?

Thanks for any help!

I didn't use any compound clips. I did use a lot of multi cam clips. I tried to open the same project on a different computer and the problem still occurs. I even ProResed all the material, copied it to a different drive and the problem is still there.

Can the problem with the ingesting of material? I did it with XDCAM Transfer.

1/Try login with another account on your mac, if problem is still, problem in your files/
2/try delete render, thumbles in your events
3/try disable all events and projects, make new event, ingest some clips with FCPX and make multicam
