relinking nightmare

I'm trying to relink files in an event, and no matter what I do nothing seems to work. I tried right clicking on the project files and choosing 'relink project files', that didn't work. Then I tried right clicking on the event in the event library and choosing 'relink event files'. This seems to have put all my media in the trash and given it weird names like 'Hands 1 17-04-52-166.mov' instead of 'Hands 1.mov'. I also switched between using original and proxy media in preferences. I seem to have got into a total mess - what can I do to sort it all out?
