Import folders as Keyword collection did not work

Maybe I am missing something here. While trying to teach a friend how to use FCP X I had him import a bunch of AVCHD footage from his Panasonic AC-160 camera. This footage is from SD cards that he had copied to his hard drive. Each card was in its own folder. When we selected them in the import window we choose to Import Folders as Keyword Collections. All of the footage imported but no Smart Collections were created. I will have to go back and double check that the "Private" file is in the root of that folder but I can't think of any other reason why this didn't work. Has anyone else seen this behavior? Any other ideas of what I might have done wrong?

Keyword collections aren't smart collections. Why would there be smart collections? Did you run analysis for people and shots?

My mistake. I typed Smart collection instead of Keyword collation. I actually do know the difference! My point was that FCP did not use the Folder as a Keyword collection during the import process. Not sure why this is. I have imported other types of footage, mostly DSLR, and used that feature with great success, but with this AVCHD footage it is not happening.

Is it because of the file structure of the AVCHD footage?

If you import from a camera card (even if the camera card was copied to your hard drive) FCPx won't create a keyword collection automatically for that card while importing even if the setting is turned on.

Interesting. Would it work if you created a camera archive first?

I really don't know, never tested that workflow.

Just tested that and it doesn't work either. A little disappointing. Makes organizing multiple card shoot a little more time consuming.

Oh well. Now I know.

I can't use FPCx right now, but check if the "Camera Name" or "Camera Angle" has some metadata, it will help you to organize your media faster.

I had to work with multiple cards a month ago and I can't remember if FCPx added the metadata to those fields or if I added myself. Maybe instead of keyword collections from a folder name, it creates a camera name/angle from the folder name.

That would be helpful on a multicam shoot. Unfortunately this was all a single camera shoot from a dance recital, there were 6 different shows over the weekend and we needed to collect the footage from each show in a Keyword collection. Only metadata that would separate them would be the date and time which we will use to organize them manually.

Import card 1, in the Browser Command-A (select all), assign keyword.
Set Browser Filter menu to show only clips with no keywords.
Import card 2, select all, keyword.
Repeat.
