I'm completely new to Final Cut Pro X and in fact what I'm looking for is not a split screen effect but rather an effect that cuts the screen in two different halves that would give me the ability to make it look as though there were two of me playing simultaneously. I'm sorry but I don't know what this effect is called.

Can somebody tell me what it's called and also how to achieve it in final cut pro x

Thank you

It's called a split screen. You put two clips on top of each other in the timeline and use the crop function on clip on top.

Tom, never one to mince words, direct, succinct, perfect. Thanks

CockneyJay, welcome aboard, there's a wonderful feature here at FCP.co, that you will soon fall in love with; the search feature. No, I'm not being facetious. First I clicked Search, then refined my search only to the Free Plugins & Templates offered here at the site. Many fine technicians have already done a lot of the groundwork for us, & thankfully shared the fruits of their labor. Here are a couple of free plugins to make not only split screens, but fancy ones that will dazzle & impress your viewers, thereby upping the value of your production.

enjoy (please remember to thank the original posters)

The fine folks at Cineflare provide this sample they call ScreenStitch

Our friend Fourdee provides this free plugin

That ought to keep you busy splitting screens for a while...

I've tried a few, I really like Tokyo Split, very simple and quite a few options. But if you really are just doing a simple split screen, just do what Tom said.
