Transfering FCP footage from one computer to another

Hi gang

I've finally got frustrated with trying to edit with my old slow mac so I've bought a new fast all singing and dancing computer. Only problem is I'm have way through and edit (wedding) on my old computer

Can anybody tell me the best way to transfer the edited footage to my new hard drive and ingest it into FCP again.

Do I just export it as normal, ie send it to compressor to convert to Apple pro res then stick it onto a portable hard drive, load it onto the new computer then ingest back into FCP ?

Does that make sense ?

Sorry if this is really basic

Neil

Are you on FCP7 or FCPX? I don't know anything about 7 (which is why it's so easy for me to love X) so if it's X I can help with that.

Regardless, you should keep all your editing work on an external hard drive, so all you really need to do is get it off your old computer and on to an external hard drive and just leave it on that drive... hopefully a Thunderbolt drive.

1. Duplicate your 'project + referenced event' unto an external drive (preferably a RAID5 to go along with your new mac).

2. Once that's completed, select the event on the external drive in your event library.

3. Then go to 'File' and 'Organize Event Files' (this will copy all the media into your event folder structure in the external drive).

4. After all this has processed, eject your external and plug it to your new mac. I just did this with a wedding project of 60 mins from a Early-2011 MBP to a Late-2012 iMac on a Pegasus R6 RAID5.

Hope this works for you and good luck.

Thanks guys, all makes sense

I use Final FCPX

I back all my files on s drobo.

I'm really just trying to pick up an edit where I left it, and continue to work on it on the new computer.

So the edit piece that I'm half way through... If I copy the project onto the external Drive I can re import it directly to the new FCPX/Computer ?

Also - will FCPX let me download the new copy of the software free as I've already brought one ?

thanks

Neil

Yeah, you can download from the App Store to multiple computers. I just posted a question similar to yours, it's just a few below this and has Dropbox in the title. Ben B posted some good links. Check it out.

No "importing", copy to ext drive inside of FCPX, fire up FCPX and it should recognize the Project and Events just fine.
