Projects on Dropbox or Google Drive?

I remember there was some discussion of this a while ago, but I can't find it and I don't think anyone really tried it out much before.

I just got a job and I'm fortunate enough that they are using FCPX and I get to edit from home as well as the studio. Right now in going through all my options trying to figure out the best solutions. I'll have my events in both locations on a thunderbolt drive and I was thinking of either keeping the projects on a smaller portable (possibly SSD) thunderbolt drive or just keeping the project files in a Google Drive or Dropbox folder.

Would this be a good solution, or would cloud storage possibly mess up the files when they sync?

If the Events are identical, you only need the "Project file", not even the whole Project folder. It will fit on a USB thumb drive. You can email it to yourself. Inside the Project folder, it is the file named "CurrentVersion.fcpproject".

There is a presentation done my Steve Martin that talks about this. I do it a lot, I know many editors using this technique.

Thanks again Ben!

Here's a follow up question.

In terms of using cloud storage, I would actually be more interested in keeping my projects synced through the Google Drive desktop folder. This way I could just have everything automatically sync and I wouldn't have to bother with moving files, I would basically just be able to shut down my computer at home, drive to work, turn that computer on, let drive sync the files while I make coffee, open FCPX with the updated project already loaded.

The issue I immediately see with this is the render files taking up a lot of space in Google Drive. I don't think this would be an issue if I had Google Fiber with 1TB of cloud storage, but I've only got 100GB and 40Mbps down, 10Mbps up.

Either way, I think what they've done in that video is exactly what I want, just a few more steps than the other ways I use Google Drive.

It does seem like cloud syncing of project files will show up in future versions of FCPX though, Apple has the data centers and everything else needed. It's just going to be a bigger amount of data than a Pages document and a yearly subscription fee for that ability to sync...
