I have a timeline with about sixty clips with timecode on them. I can't figure out how to remove the timecode without deleting each attribute individually. I can't highlight a bunch of clips and delete all attributes - really?

Remove timecode? I've never seen any NLE do that. It is metadata built in. What is the goal?

Do you mean some timecode reader effect? Nope, no Remove Attributes yet. Feedback form time again.

Sorry - I wasn't clear. I used a timecode reader so it's effectively burned in. In order to remove the tc,reader, I have to manually uncheck it for each clip. I'd like to be able to highlight a group of clips with tc reader on them and apply Remove All Attributes. We used to be able to do that in 7, no? It's been so long, I can't even remember!

No. Fcpx still doesn't have a remove attributes button. Please send feedback as I did.

That being said, I'm a bit puzzled because how did you put it on there?

In FCP7 the timecode reader was an effect. In FCPX it's only available as a generator, and as such it only takes the timecode of the timeline.
For instance we for our work really need the timecode reader (also because FCPX still doesn't have a timecode overlay like 7 had) and as a work-around we put our clips in compound clips with the Same timecode as the original, and put a timecode generator above it.
We then use those compound clips to edit and after the edit is done, we remove the timecode generator and it ripples trough in all our edits.

This is of course possible because we work with about 6 very long clips (+ 5 hour recordings) per medical case we edit. If you have hundreds of clips, it's just not worth it.
On the upside, having a timecode reader in FCP7 was pretty intensive to work with and export. Now, in FCPX, we can easier Play out 6 prores streams with all of them having timecode on them, picture in picture. And even exports are quick.

As it's only built in as a generator I'm interested in how you put it on your clips.
I think there used to be some 3rd party effect timecode reader, but it also only took sequence timecode instead of source timecode after the 10.0.3 update from Apple.

If it's a filter or something that's common to all clips, you should be able to select them all, open the inspector, select the effect, and delete it. That will delete it from all the clips.

Can't sleep? Try this: fcpxpert.net ;-)

No - that doesn't work. Each clip has to be done manually. I put in a feature bug request. I'm sure this is something they can take care of pretty easily.

If there is one effect you need to place on multiple clips, the two methods are to either put all the clips into a Compound Clip and apply the effect to the CC. Or place an Adjustment Layer Template that sits above all the clips, and apply the effects to that.

Not sure how to use the Adjustment Layer Template, but it looks worth a shot. Can I apply it to various clips in different parts of a timeline or do they have to be near each other? Or I could wait for Apple to fix it.

Ideally, I would have fpcx read the original tc from my clips (why it has the option Read TC from Source is beyond me because it doesn't - or maybe I don't understand what they mean by Source). When I send my clients rough drafts (for longer pieces), I like to use the TC reader so they can reference clips to remove or modify. If the tc they're referencing is from the original clip, then I can find it easier.

That download has a ReadMe file that explains it.

It is basically a blank Title Template. Any effect applied to it will show on all clips below it.

There is a free plug-in that allows you to burn-in the source timecode of the clip it's applied to:

www.coremelt.com/2015-10-15-12-16-33/coremeltfree.html

As for removing effects/plug-ins, typically FCPX will allow you to multi-select clips and make mass changes to them. The caveat is that the element you are changing has to be set identically across all the selected clips. If there is one clip in the selected group that doesn't "match" the others, you won't be able to delete the effect. Try selecting them in smaller groups.

One often overlooked feature of Compressor is that you can create a time code overlay directly there without needing an adjustment layer in FCPX. I then use the Compressor preset in sharing from FCPX to create any output that needs a timecode burn. Because FCPX has a timecode display anyyway, I find having an adjustment layer with a timecode effect unnecessary.

Using the Compressor preset is way neater, at least for me.

Plus Compressor lets you do overly/bugs for additional copy protection, and closed captioning.
