Moving Projects and events separately? was created by alven
Ok I have had a bit of trouble with moving projects and events previously, when I have tried moving them from whit in the program, so I want to make sure I do it correctly this time.
I have one event that I have for several projects. At this point I have 2 projects for this event, but it will be more. I have been saving everything to my mac, and it is already full, so I will have to move something over to a drive where I already have the original imported clips on. Hopefully it will be big enough.
I was thinking of maybe moving the projects over and keeping the event on my mac, would that work alright? I know you also can move a project and event at the same time, but what if you have 1 event and 2 projects, and you move all 3 items over at the same time also? I am thinking maybe the first option would be best because I am afraid I will run out of space also on the external drive.

Move everything to an external drive in the Finder.
Delete it from the OS drive.
Done.
Actually, I'd put everything in the OS drive in a folder called "FCP Originals". Then launch, be sure Events and Projects link back to each other. There's a way to correct it if they don't. But when I've done this, they work just fine. Once you've verified they all work, delete the "FCP Originals" folder to free up OS drive space.
Move it all, you'll get better performance in the long run. Be sure that drive is at least FW800, if not T'bolt or true USB 3.0.
Moving the Projects won't free up as much space as moving the Events (which contain the actual media).

Are you using referenced media in your event, or have you copied the actual clips to the event?
Either way, you can make a top level folder in your project library (right click the drive icon and create a new folder, make sure it's created on the drive containing your projects). Call it "all projects" or whatever. Then, in the project library in the app, not in the finder, put all your projects into this new folder. Now you only need to move your one event and the one top level folder containing all your projects associated with this event. You can make as many top level folders as you want to organize multiple projects.
If you use Event Manager, you can then hide/show these top level folders to access only the projects you need at any given time. EM won't manage individual projects within these folders, it's up to you to organize what's in the top level folders from within FCP X.
