Hi all.
Im hoping that someone can help me with the issues im having. Im very new to FCPX and as much as ive learnt (self taught), im having some issues with editing video and audio.
Basically the problem im having is as follows.
I have a long video clip in my timeline (an interview) and I want to cut sections up and add another video in its place but have the audio from the interview still playing but every time I do this, the audio is always out and when the video goes back to the subject that im interviewing, the lip synching never matches up. I will give you a rundown on the way I have been doing it.
1. detach audio from video
2. use the blade tool to cut a section out of the video that I want to replace
3. add other video in its place
4. try to match audio up
But this is where its causing me major problems as the audio just wont match up to the lips of the interviewer and subject thats being interviewed. This must be because im not cutting the exact same amount from the video to match up to the size of the video thats going in its place. Im not entirely sure. Its really frustrating me as ive tried on numerous occasions but to no avail.
I hope this makes sense as to what I mean.
Thanks.
Gari.

Use connected clips if you want video to play over another video while retaining the original audio. This is usually called b-roll when you're editing interview material. If you don't want the b-roll to play any audio (you only want the interview audio), hit Option-2 to make it a video only edit. Don't detach the original audio (it will only create sync issues). Then either use the Q key to connect the clip at the playhead/skimmer, or you can drag your clip down to the timeline to connect it.
Since this is something fundamental, I highly recommend you watch some tutorials. There are free ones on YouTube, but if you really want to learn quickly and the proper way, go to Ripple Training, Lynda.com, MacProVideo, Larry Jordan, etc. There are a ton of great tutorials out there. It will really speed up your workflow when you know how to do something right away instead of looking up how to do it as you go.
