Canon C100 import?

I've really been considering buying a Canon C100. It shoots in the AVCHD codec, and I've been unsuccessful in finding out if this can be imported and edited directly in FCP-X 10.7? I know I can get an ATOMOS NINJA and shoot clean HDMI out to a variety of ProRes flavors, but sometimes I need to be more run and gun and want to use the SDHC card. It looks like I need to transcode every clip in a third party program before I can ingest and edit the footage in FCP-X? If so that may be a deal breaker for me. I used to do that with my 7D footage in legacy FCP7 and I really like not having to double up all my clips, to say nothing of the time involved to transcode everything.

Anyone here have this camera and could you describe your workflow to get from SDHC card to editing in FCPX?

It would be much appreciated!

Where are you getting this information from? This is quite wrong.

You connect the camera or card and use Cmd-I for importing. I'm assuming you're using the current version of the application.

Well I googled this: canon c100 workflow fcpx
Most links all come up talking about doing a transcode. I thought something might be funny when I realized most of them mentioned a certain conversion software, almost like they somehow "planted" all these posts on different places to sell their software.

I'm glad to hear it's a pretty direct process for importing the footage. I take it you can still keep "create optimized media" unchecked, and it will just re-wrap the AVCHD files into H.264 files?

I usually like to put all my clips into folders at the finder level. Then when I import folders into FCPX, they are already semi-organized. If FCPX has to import the clips, this will be an issue. Not to mention accessing them in other projects will mean having to keep the EVENT folder active. I guess I could live with that though.

Thanks for your reply.

Basically, you create optimized media, move it out of the event to wherever, and relink. Maybe a solution?

I actually did something like this recently... I had a ton of mp3's referenced in an event, and threw them all out... thought the gig was done and I hadn't really used any of them... Well... gig came back. Discovered that X had conveniently transcoded them all to WAV files stored in the event. Dragged them all to a finder location, relinked, good to go....

Can't sleep? Try this: fcpxpert.net ;-)

Thanks, I'll have to look into that for sure. Seems to me, the few times I imported directly from FCPX, the footage was in a bin as an unrecognized file. I guess FCPX recognizes it, but you couldnt play it from the finder, or open in any other program. Will have to test this out more.
