The correct way to archive a Final Cut Pro X Project - for me?

I use FCPX as our / my family movie library where all the video imported into Events (in the same way as I do whit Aperture). Here I create Keyword collections of children's and family's name, as well as for other general and repeating situations. The goal is to retrieve all the clips of a person or a situation at some point. As I'm more interested in the Events/ org. video-files than the actual finished project when I exported the project to a master file and up to my Vimeo account - although they also may have a value later. My projects often refer to Events with light leaks and other 3 party media files for effects and general projects.

As of today, do I backup the entire working disk, where I delete renderers and HQ files of completed projects to save space. The reason why I can not backup per project, is precisely the ability to use any material when having to put together a new project in the feature. I can\t see my self doing anything whit a old Project - if now it\s for a learning point of view.

When an Event and Project is "done using", I hide this / these with 'Event Manager', to release hardware capacity/ memory for FCPX. But I will eventually get into a situation where there are large amounts of data to be available, and thus consider a form of archiving. But I\m unsure about "The correct way to archive a Final Cut Pro X Project" is the correct method for me/ my use.

Does anyone have experience and input for how archive should be done here? The working drive is a Pegasus R4 (4TB) and I have continuous backup to a NAS with CarbonCloner.

The only solution I see for ever increasing amount of long term footage archive is unfortunately expensive.

I have the same problem as you that I need to archive the events for reuse later. Projects will be compiled out of several events and events could be used in future projects (natural history). Events need to be accessible forever, Projects, once finished, rarely.

The only long term viable solution for me is LTO storage. Expensive to buy the drive but the cartridges are relatively cheap and last way longer and are much more reliable than hard drives.

So once I finish an event and want to archive I put it on LTO. I archive the whole thing including transcoded and proxy. If I need to restore I can either restore the whole event including HQ and proxy or proxy only first to see if the event contains footage I need.

If I need to restore a project I just restore the events it needs. The project will tell me in case I forgotten.

I keep all footage inside FCP events (no external reference) to be able to restore the whole thing in one go. Neat and tidy.

Initial investment is about $5000 (don't the current prices) for the drive and software (BruPE) but it is one technology which will not change quickly and new LTO drives are backwards compatible so my archive tapes will be accessible for a very long time.

Only other way is to keep buying hard drives and either mounting the ones you need or copying them back onto the system. But you need to spin them up once every 6 month and who knows which connection standard we'll be using in 3 years time..
